FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is ISM gluten-free?

Yes. Our Pure Castile Soap and All-Purpose Spray are formulated without wheat, oat, barley or rye derived ingredients.

If someone in your home is managing celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, a cleaning product is on your hands, on the dishes you eat from, and on the counters where you prepare food. That is why we get asked, and why we answer it plainly.

What is in it?

The soap is five things: saponified organic coconut, olive and jojoba oils, organic aloe vera and rosemary extract. The spray is that same base diluted with water, so six. Nothing else is in either one.

Not in either one: no bleach, no ammonia, no parabens, no phthalates, no formaldehyde, no sulfates, no synthetic fragrances or dyes, no GMOs. Every ingredient is on our Ingredients & Transparency page, with what each one is for, and our amber glass is tested by an independent laboratory.

As with any cleaning product: keep out of reach of children except under adult supervision, follow label directions, not intended for consumption.

Is ISM cruelty-free? Do you test on animals?

Never. ISM is certified through the Leaping Bunny Program, the internationally recognized standard for cruelty-free personal care and household products. Certification requires supplier monitoring and ongoing recommitment.

Is it unscented, or is there a masking fragrance?

Unscented. There is no added fragrance and no masking scent. You may notice a faint natural smell from the plant oils themselves. That is the soap.

Can I use it around kids and pets?

Every ingredient is on the label and on our Ingredients & Transparency page, so you can decide what belongs in your home. As with any cleaning product, keep out of reach of children except under adult supervision, and follow label directions. Not intended for consumption.

Why amber glass instead of plastic?

Amber glass blocks light, which helps protect plant-based formulas over time, and unlike plastic it can be refilled indefinitely without degrading. It is also the reason we test our glass. See Ingredients & Transparency.

How does the refill system work?

Buy the amber glass bottle once, then refill it instead of buying more. The 32 oz refill arrives in an HDPE #2 jug, a plastic most curbside recycling programs in the United States accept. Check your local program. The glass is the part you keep. See How It Works.

How much soap do I use?

Pure Castile Soap is concentrated. Dishes take a few drops. Floors take about a quarter cup in a bucket of warm water. The full list is on How It Works.

Is the scrub brush compostable?

The bristles are coconut coir, a plant-based, renewable material. At end of life the bristle head can be composted or added to a garden bed, where it will break down over time. Like most materials, it will not meaningfully break down in a landfill.

The handle is solid wood and built to be kept. When the bristles wear out, you replace the head and keep the handle.
